Personal monochrome laser printers largely dictate the shape of the total monochrome laser printer market in terms of shipments. Total shipments (and personal shipments) will reach a maximum in 2010 (see Figure). In 2007, total shipments reached just under 20 million units. More than 98 percent of those units were either personal or workgroup printers. Shipments for these printer segments will decline in the final forecast years as they face the same pressures that threaten all monochrome single-function machines — color and multifunctionality.
Personal Laser Printers
Products in this category are designed for either single users or workgroups of fewer than five users. Prices are predominantly below $500, with many models selling for under $150. With so many relatively inexpensive offerings, personal monochrome printers have become popular in small office/home offices and small and medium-size business settings in more developed markets and in more substantial businesses in developing markets. With multiple outlets showing interest in these types of machines, it is no surprise that shipments will remain healthy for the entire forecast period.
Representative products include Brother’s HL-2140 and HL-2170; Dell’s 1710 and 1720; HP’s LaserJet P1005, P1505 and P2015; Konica Minolta’s PagePro 1350w; Lexmark’s E240 and E340; Oki’s B2200 and B2400; and Samsung’s ML-1630.
