According to Lyra’s Hard Copy Supplies Advisory Service, the total color toner cartridge market, which includes cyan, magenta, yellow, and black (CMYK) cartridges, is expected to more than double by 2011.
Lyra anticipates a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 21 percent from 2006, when 66 million cartridges were shipped, to 2011.
Color MFPs to Replace Monochrome Machines
The rapidly growing installed base has had a very positive impact on CMYK toner cartridge demand. The personal color laser printer category first emerged in 2003, and since then virtually every vendor has launched at least one printer that costs less than $500. These printers are used not only in offices, but are also installed in homes and home offices. In addition to the growth in the low end of the color laser printer market, many vendors offer A4-size printer-based color laser MFPs. These MFPs are beginning to make inroads into offices and are expected to continue gaining ground, replacing monochrome machines.

As a result of the adoption of color laser technology, we expect a robust growth rate for color toner cartridges over the forecast period. From 2004 to 2011, Lyra expects color toner cartridge shipments to continue to grow at least 10 percent each year. Although the market is growing, we expect its growth rate to gradually decline each year, although it will still be at a robust 15 percent by 2011.
