Now I’ve been working with printers for quite awhile and this did not make sense. At first, like most, I thought it was the toner cartridge (let’s blame the simplest thing). After comparing the new toner cartridge with the old, I confirmed they were the same. I worked a little more and got the toner in, but then it still would not lock in. Upon further examination I discovered what looked like a spring or a wire sticking out of the right side where the cartridge lock is supposed to be (see Figure 1). Taking a closer look at this spring, I noticed a piece of plastic inside the slot was also broken. The first question that came to mind was “What is this?” followed immediately by “How do I fix it?”
To answer both of these questions, I had to get inside the printer. I decided to first call HP tech support and see if there were any service notes on this problem. They sent me a service advisory with complete instructions on how to fix this problem. The advisory also stated that the procedures are not in the service manual. That is where this article comes in; to assist those of you who cannot access the service advisory from HP.
