Each November, Indians celebrate Diwali, a Hindu festival of lights exalting the victory of good over evil. “Diwali is similar to Christmas in the U.S.,” explained Dhruv Mahajan of Prefil Systems, a New Delhi-based company that is one of the country’s leading domestic remanufacturers. “Diwali’s a giant festival with fireworks everywhere. However, unlike Christmas in the U.S., businesses here stay open during this time. It is a good time to have quality discussions with retailers.”

The discussions that Mahajan will have with Indian retailers will focus on his own modern-day battle of light and dark — mainly, educating retailers about the benefits of using remanufactured printer cartridges over OEMs.

The market is much like the United States in the early 1990s, when there were many companies interested in producing remanufactured products, but the lack of education and organization were difficult hurdles that took a decade to overcome. Mahajan said, “We need education about the market [in India]. The market is better now, but we still need education, education, education.

Prefil System is planning seminars during Diwali to help retailers see the light, so to speak, about the availability of quality remanufactured product that Prefil System and a handful of other Indian remanufacturers provide.
