The start of a new year has traditionally been a time when we reflect on the previous year and look to the upcoming year and ponder what is in store for us. In our business we’ve traditionally taken time in the last quarter of each year to go through a formal business planning process; something which I believe is absolutely key to having a well-managed company. You have to define your strategies, goals and plans, and certainly define what would be a success for you and your company, or else you are just heading down a road with no directions or maps. Not a good thing.
To kick off our strategic planning session this year, one of our executives shared with the rest of us a presentation that he’d seen at a recent computer industry event. The title of the presentation was Shift Happens, and it was filled with a number of very interesting facts, statistics and observations that were simply astounding. Since seeing this presentation, I’ve done a bit of research on it, and found that the data has really good sources. This information was put together by some educators in Colorado and was originally designed to get their fellow educators to really think about what their students are going to need to be successful in the 21st century, and then how that might impact what they do in their classrooms. (See the information box at the end of this article for a link to the original presentation as well as its sources.)
