Some supplies market trends are perennial — consolidation in the industry, OEMs defending their intellectual property and the slowing growth of the North American toner cartridge market. What will change in the supplies market in 2008? Lyra's analysts are predicting a few new trends for this year.

Increase in high-volume inkjet printers

OEM printer vendors do not consider home photo printing a sustainable driver for the desktop inkjet market and are looking to high-volume office applications to bring in the revenue they need. It is likely that more business-oriented inkjet printers will be introduced and purchased in 2008, therefore more high-yield cartridges will be required to serve this growing market segment. OEMs believe that inkjets have the potential to capture some of the tremendous growth that the low-end color laser market has experienced.

Continued fragmentation of inkjet and laser cartridge SKUs

As printer life cycles shorten and OEMs introduce greater variability in their product lines, inkjet and laser cartridge SKUs will experience increasing fragmentation. This is a challenge for remanufacturers, who will have to keep pace with OEM innovation.
