UKCRA’s Year of Accomplishments

UKCRA members have been involved in several noteworthy endeavours this past year.
One of the dustiest but most rewarding tasks members took on was delving through old trade magazines, manuals and their personal documented instructions and procedures in finding records proving prior artwork in the remanufacturing process. Submitting this archival information contributed to ETIRA’s (European Toner and Remanufacturing Association) successful challenge to the European Patent Office and its subsequent decision to reject Canon's patent on the remanufacturing process.
Another undertaking that garnered wide attention in the U.K. and abroad was HP’s disingenuous advertisements in the National Press comparing refilled inkjets to used food or gambling. This led to UKCRA submitting a complaint to the Advertising Standards Authority with one end result being favorable media coverage for our industry.
A further very important activity was the attendance by UKCRA representatives to the CEN and BSI discussion groups held throughout Europe and the U.K., giving our industry a voice along with OEMs.
Another crucial undertaking was the attendance by different UKCRA members to the environmental workshops on waste and the exemptions hierarchy headed by the U.K. Environment Agency (EA) and Department of the Environment (DEFRA). Our attendance was crucial in order to safeguard the status of U.K. remanufacturers from waste management licensing.
