To become certified for life, you must pass two certification exams. The first, called the Essentials exam (ID number 220-601), tests your expertise in eight domains by asking 100 questions in 90 minutes (the minimum passing score is 675). After passing this exam, you must choose another exam (an elective) among three possibilities:
IT Technician (220-602) — suggested for “individuals who work or intend to work in a mobile or corporate technical environment with a high level of face-to-face client interaction.”
Remote Support Technician (220-603) — suggested for “individuals who work or intend to work in a remote-based work environment where client interaction, client training, and connectivity issues are emphasized.”
Depot Technician (220-604) — suggested for “individuals who work or intend to work in settings where hardware-related activities are emphasized.”
Every one of the elective exams consists of 90 multiple-choice-type questions that must be answered in 90 minutes with a minimum passing score of 700 and are available at Prometric (www.prometric.com) as well as VUE (www.vue.com) testing centers worldwide. The cost of each exam, including Essentials, is $158. While the first exam is commonly referred by its name, “Essentials,” all of the electives are better known by their exam ID numbers.
