Throughout industry circles, rumors and opinions have been flying for months about what many industry pundits warned us about for years and what others now view as an abrupt about-face by one of the leading office supply retailers of remanufactured and compatible supplies: Staples. As of this writing, Lyra Research, a leading market research company in the imaging industry, announced Staples’ intent to discontinue the sale of Staples-branded inkjet and laser compatible cartridges for Hewlett-Packard and Epson printers (read more on Page 49). The statement indicates that Staples’ decision to cease the sale of Staples-branded HP compatible cartridges applies to the big box office supplier’s “retail catalog.”
A recent perusal of the Staples Web site confirms a noticeable reduction of remanufactured HP inkjet and laser cartridges. While there were a few SKUs found during a site search, there were no HP remanufactured cartridges found in their primary product listings. Interestingly enough and even comforting to see, there were numerous listings of Staples-branded remanufactured cartridges in other OEM categories, such as Brother, Lexmark, Samsung, Sharp, Panasonic and others.
