Walgreens’ nationwide installation of Ink-O-Dem machines, slated to get underway in March, caps a series of moves by TonerHead Inc.’s CEO, Harry Nicodem, to place inkjet refilling equipment into retail environments. A crucial step in that process occurred in November 2004, when Nicodem acquired the intellectual property rights in TonerPlus LLP’s industrial ink cartridge refilling station, the Ramora X. Nicodem then merged the Ramora technology with that from his own InkJet Café.
In June 2005, the Ink-O-Dem machines were initially placed in 32 Midwestern Walgreens stores. The rollout scheduled for March includes 1,500 stores with another 1,500 stores likely coming online by the end of the year. Some recently opened Walgreens stores in markets such as Manhattan and Chicago are already offering the service.
The Ink-O-Dem unit has a 30-inch by 24-inch footprint and stands 59 inches tall. The machines will be installed in the photo areas at Walgreens. They feature a Web-based interface that allows each machine to be monitored and updated remotely to support additional ink cartridges. Each unit ships with an onboard computer and display screen to guide the operator through each step of the refill process.
