Corporate Express Launches E-Friendly Program

November 8, 2005

Corporate Express announced that it has launched "Ecoffice," a program aimed at helping Corporate Express customers make environmentally friendly choices for their office. Through the new program, Corporate Express will carry more than 3,500 environmentally friendly products, and will implement in-house initiatives aimed at reducing environmental impact. Corporate Express will continue to produce its 14,000-item Sourcebook on recycled paper.

Corporate Express is one of the world's largest business-to-business suppliers of essential office, facilities, furniture and computer products and services, with 2004 sales of approximately $4.5 billion in North America.

To help customers identify and purchase environmentally friendly products, Corporate Express' 2006 Sourcebook, which was released in September, uses an Ecoffice icon to denote those products that have a reduced impact on the environment versus similar products in the same category. The same icon will be used on Corporate Express' online purchasing site, E-Way.

Some of the "green" products offered in the catalog and online include: recycled content paper products, rechargeable batteries, remanufactured toner cartridges, environmentally friendly cleaners, recycled content trash bags, biodegradable cups, refillable pens & pencils, recycled plastic desk accessories, and rewriteable CDs. In addition, many of these products meet tough Federal environmental standards such as Environmentally Preferable Purchasing (EPP), and Comprehensive Procurement Guidelines (CPG) and help Federal, state, and local governments meet their green purchasing requirements.

"It important that we help our customers make environmentally friendly choices for their office. We adhere to high standards of environmental sustainability, and we want to pass our practices on to our customers," said Dave Grove, Sr. VP, Sales, Marketing & Merchandising for Corporate Express. "Through the Ecoffice program, we plan to add a minimum of 100 new environmentally friendly products to our catalog every year."

The Ecoffice program extends to Corporate Express' in-house practices as well; the Sourcebook catalog is printed on 80% recycled paper, and in 2004, Corporate Express recycled over 350 tons of catalogs returned by customers. All Corporate Express offices and distribution centers have active recycling programs, and in 2004, Corporate Express initiated a program to collect compostable wastes at its corporate headquarters.

In a related note, Corporate Express recently purchased a hybrid vehicle for its Wauwatosa, Wisconsin Division. Associates working in the Wisconsin Division's Business Machines sector will use the gas/electric hybrid vehicle for sales and maintenance calls; the hybrid will replace a current gas-only vehicle.

In 2004, Corporate Express joined the Hybrid Truck Users Forum (HTUF), a non-profit organization dedicated to the advancement of alternative fuel vehicle use, particularly hydraulic and electric hybrid trucks. In addition, Corporate Express has implemented sophisticated routing and tracking software that has enabled the company to reduce the overall number of miles driven each day by its 1,400 daily delivery routes.

"Corporate Express is committed to pursuing alternative fuel options for our fleet of vehicles," said Tim Beauchamp, Sr. VP, Distribution Operations. "This is our first venture into alternative fuel-powered vehicles (AFVs); we have been researching fleet options and hope to be able to put more AFVs on the road in the future."
