Xerox® 5318/5320/5322 Copy Cartridge Rejuvenation

The Xerox 5318, 5320, and 5322 copier models utilize the same xerographic copy cartridge. Two cartridge styles are on the market. In the United States, the cartridge order numbers are 13R56 and 13R75. Copy cartridges from Europe often use order numbers 13R57 and 13R78. For the purposes
of this discussion and for indentification, I will refer to these as Types A and B. The primary difference between these two types lies in the way they store the waste dry ink/toner. Type A transfers the waste dry ink/toner removed
by the wiper blade from the outside to the inside of the OPC photoreceptor drum. Type B circulates the waste dry ink/toner removed by the wiper blade from the photoreceptor drum to the inside of the copy cartridge and
cover, which serves as a hollow waste dry ink/toner sump or tank.
The quickest way to distinguish between Type A and Type B cartridges is to examine their handles. Type A uses a hard plastic, rectangular handle while Type B is carried by a plastic strap (Fig. 1). Other
subtle differences will be discussed in the removal procedures outlined in this article.
No aftermarket components are available for these cartridges, but needed parts can be recovered from spent cartridges. Be sure to carefully inspect all used components for wear and other defects that may render
